Phase 1 

BioMADE is excited to welcome participants to Phase I of its Academic Challenge to increase the awareness and adoption of biomanufactured foods.  Welcome to the Qubes Hub for BioMADE's Academic Challenge. Key dates

Deliverables for Phase I of the Academic Challenge are due August 15, 2024. This includes:

  • 3-5 minute video describing the project
  • Written technical report
  • Two-page description of contributions to each phase of the Academic Challenge from each participating institution 

The Academic Challenge Advisory Committee will review materials and advance three teams to Phase II. Teams will be announced September 3, 2024. View additional details in the Request for Applications. 

About the Academic Challenge

The challenge will engage industry-guided, intercollegiate, and interdisciplinary undergraduate teams to propose, design, and explore solutions for biomanufactured production of food and food ingredients based on the following scenarios:

  • Food scarcity in rural and urban environments
  • Bioproduced food for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief
  • Nutritional requirements for mobile troops deployed in austere conditions
  • Long duration military base or limited space environments

Themes for projects could include: 

  • Selection and design of bioproduced macro and micronutrients
  • Feedstock optimization
  • Bioprocess design and end-product formulation
  • Manufacturing processes modeled on real-world scenarios for food and food ingredient production and scarcity
